Deconstructed
We've taken four gems from the bountiful supply on Mirrors' debut album Lights And Offerings [originally released Feb 2011] and handed them over to four of the most exciting producers in the business. Having subsequently deconstructed and completely rebuilt them in their respective styles, the results are stunning; a testament to both the quality of the materials and the mastery of their interpreters.
First to step up to the plate is the ubercool Pictures Music signing Lapalux. Tipped as one of the hottest electronic producers on the rise right now with a forthcoming EP on Flying Lotus' Brain Feeder label, Lapalux turns Fear Of Drowning into a dense, explosive tour de force. Slow, massive, protracted drums and skittering percussive noises like Michael Bay sound effects combine with eerie distressed vocals and wall-of- sound synths to create a truly epic interpretation of the opening track from Lights And Offerings.
Next up is Rudi Zygadlo, Planet Mu / Pictures Music regular and genuine dubstep innovator who's been turning heads since 2010. His imagi- native take on Write Through The Night is as chunky and bass driven as it is lofty and eccentric, with fat pulsing saw waves juxtaposed with James Noo's wailing vocal and littered with erratic orchestral stabs.
Then, blending fluttering, syncopated beats with stuttered pads lines and slithers of an aching vocal, relative newcomer Seth lends his style of ethereal, dub tinged soundscapes to Some- where Strange and in superb form. This young man from Italy is a current Skint favourite and certainly one to watch, having released his outstanding Skint Under 5's debut EP [Cloud Gazing] in October.
Undisputed techno guru Radioactive Man rounds things off with his rework of Ways To An End. He transforms it into a huge, bass-laden, 808 peppered banger in the way that only he really knows how.
Four distinct and equally outstanding mixes from four unique producers makes this package some- thing quite special indeed.
